Q If I get pregnant while taking herbal medicine, can I keep taking it? And in early pregnancy, is severe pain on one side of the lower abdomen dangerous?
A Once pregnancy is confirmed, do not continue herbal medicine on your own; you must let us know so it can be adjusted for pregnancy. Also, severe one-sided lower-abdominal pain and bleeding in early pregnancy can be a warning sign of ectopic pregnancy and require immediate medical care.
Detailed Answer
If you become pregnant while taking herbal medicine, it is not appropriate to simply continue a prescription meant for pregnancy preparation. If you let us know of the pregnancy right away, we will adjust whether to continue and the prescription to suit the pregnancy stage. Also, if you have severe pain on one side of the lower abdomen or abnormal bleeding in early pregnancy, it could be an ectopic pregnancy implanting in the fallopian tube or elsewhere, which is an emergency, so you must see an obstetrician without delay.
Korean Medicine Clinic Perspective
At Dongjedang, once pregnancy is confirmed, we put safety first and adjust the prescription, and when there are signs of pain or bleeding suggesting ectopic pregnancy, we advise you to undergo obstetric examination first, before any Korean medicine treatment. Our principle is to continue necessary care only after safety has been confirmed.
